How the perforating gun works

How the perforating gun works

In a nutshell, perforating creates holes in the wellbore casing and/or tubing, and form a path (perforation tunnel), through the casing, cement, and beyond formation damage. This establishes communication between the hydrocarbon-bearing formation and the wellbore. The hydrocarbons can then flow or be pumped from the reservoir through the production tubing to the surface.

Shaped explosive charges which are assembled in a thin-walled steel tube  (charge tube) and connected by the detonating cord.

The detonating cord runs against the back of each charge and from top to bottom of the charge tube.

The loaded charge tube is placed in a heavy wall steel gun carrier and secured.

Alignment features inside the carrier ensure the shaped charges line up with milled features (scallops) on the exterior of the gun carrier.

When the detonating cord and in turn the shaped charges are initiated, the charges form a high energy jet that will pierce the center of the scallop, the casing and create a tunnel through the cement and into the formation/reservoir.
